What's So Special about 11/11?
In the world of Kundalini Yoga, the number 11 carries a profound meaning.
While numbers 1-10 are associated with different aspects of human consciousness, known as the Ten Bodies, the 11th embodiment is utterly transcendent. You may have heard the 11 referred to as the harmonious expression of all 10 bodies in unison, and while this is true, it's the very nature of that fact that reveals it as something else entirely, as no thing at all, actually.
The quality of the 11 points to merger itself. It is the cosmic mirror, where 1 meets 1, reflecting the self and the universe as one seamless whole.
Through the lens of yogic wisdom, we see the 11 as a symbolic expression of what happens when a spiritual practice moves us from beyond fear and discrimination into the space of eternal grace and faith. Not a blind faith, but one based on our own personal encounter with the divine mystery.
To merge with the infinite is to perceive our personal experience, that is, our mandala of emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations, in direct and undifferentiated relationship with the vast Cosmic Whole—creation itself (Om).
It may seem like a lofty aspiration, but its beauty lies in its simplicity. To align with the 11 energy is to zero out everything we are not. To do nothing so that we may get out of our own way. And this happens naturally when we use Kriya, deep meditation, and sound healing to empty the weight of physical and mental distractions.
In this way, we lighten our load to become more non-physical than physical. Unwinding all that doesn't resonate with the truth of our existence, our essential nature can reveal itself. In kundalini yoga, we express that nature in the sound "Sat Nam" ("true identity").
This is why the corresponding element to the 11 is ether or space. It is the expansive nothingness from which everything is born and to which everything returns. Ether also is the medium through which the subtle vibrations of light and sound give shape to every layer of existence.
The 11 reminds us that the universe, at every level, mirrors itself. Planets orbit stars, much as particles revolve around atomic nuclei. Earth's water cycle reflects our own circulatory and respiratory systems. Inner thoughts become outer reality, just as cities are macrocosmic expressions of the very cells in living organisms. The number 11 symbolizes this multi-layer interconnection too: to create change in one system is to shift the fabric of all others. It’s a reminder of karma and dharma in action—the wave of cause and effect that ripples across all beings from moment to moment, lifetime to lifetime.
In Kundalini Yoga, we use sound to harness this natural ripple. By working with sacred sound currents like mantras and healing instruments, we address disturbances on a vibrational level first, reshaping atomic and cellular structures. This sonic healing then allows us to regulate physical tissues and systems, including the heart’s rhythm, to bring the body into natural balance. This homeostatic vibration can then get to work discharging the gravity of our thoughts so that our awareness syncopates with the heartbeat of existence itself.
As we attune to this sacred vibration, we shed the layers that obscure our inner light, allowing our Sat Nam, our true identity, to resonate through every fiber of our being. The 11 calls us to step into this expansive space, a place where personal and cosmic meet, where the journey is not about becoming more, but about remembering that we are already whole.
